Svidnik, April 19 (TASR) - Death Valley, situated between the villages of Kruzlova, Kapisova and Nizna Pisana in the district of Svidnik (Presov region), reminds its visitors of the events of WWII and the fighting that took place in the area below the Dukla Pass.
The valley was named after the largest tank battle during the Carpathian-Dukla Operation, which took place here.
The natural military museum on the territory of the village of Kruzlova showcases tank technology, depicting a tank platoon on the attack. Eight T-34/85 tanks form a firing line.
In 2022, a nearly 14-metre, four-storey observation tower in the shape of a bullet for a Czechoslovak rifle was built in Death Valley. Kruzlova mayor Adrian Guzo said that the unusual shape of the tower recalls the fiercest battles that took place in the area of the Dukla Pass. According to him, it's possible to see almost the entire Death Valley, the surrounding villages and part of the town of Svidnik from the tower, while in favourable weather even the High Tatra mountains are visible.
"We're also preparing attempts at a couple of records in Death Valley, we currently hold six. I don't want to reveal too much, as sometimes we might not succeed, but we'll do our best to add some more," the mayor has told TASR.
The municipality has managed to repair the pedestals under all the tanks in the past couple of years. Guzo said that the municipality engages in exemplary cooperation with the Defence Ministry, to which it sends a request for individual monuments to be modernised and reconstructed every year.
