Trebisov, April 22 (TASR) - A reminder of the WW2 and its victims is also the military cemetery in Trebisov (Kosice region), which lies in the central part of the town cemetery.
According to the town authority, it contains 163 military graves, in which 258 Soviet soldiers from the WW2 are buried. In addition, there are also 29 graves of war victims from the WW1.
Among the regular events that the town of Trebisov organizes at this commemorative site is the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Liberators’ Memorial. "These public ceremonial events take place every year on the occasion of the anniversary of the liberation of our town on December 1, the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising, and the Victory Day over Fascism. The next such event will take place on May 7," town spokesperson Martina Raczova told TASR.
The last major investment in the reconstruction of the cemetery took place in 2005, including the replacement of monuments and new paving on the stairs and around the memorial. "The current appearance of the cemetery is characterized by tombstones of simple design, with marble slabs engraved with the names of the fallen," added Raczova.
Trebisov was liberated on December 1, 1944, by the Soviet army — specifically the 351st and 24th divisions of the 18th Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front. During the fighting for the town, 267 soldiers of the Red Army and 17 local residents were killed.
According to information from the town authority, the war cemetery was established based on a resolution of the local national committee council on April 10, 1945, according to a project by Captain Jusov. After gathering the fallen and deceased Red Army soldiers and arranging the graves, a memorial to the Red Army was built in its center. The cemetery was renovated in 1984 and 2005.
