Unlocking of Dunajec River and Hiking Trails Cancelled Due to Pope's Funeral

Cerveny Klastor, April 23 (TASR) - "Unlocking" of the Dunajec River and hiking trails, a symbolic opening of the summer tourist season in the Pieniny mountains, won't take place in Cerveny Klastor (Presov region) on Saturday (April 26), as the organisers decided to cancel it after they learnt the date of Pope Francis' funeral. "We decided to cancel the event after the date of the Pope's funeral was announced, as it fell right on the date of our event. It didn't seem appropriate to us to celebrate, dance, sing, while the whole world mourns the passing of Pope Francis," said Stefan Danko, the president of the Association for Pieniny and Zamagurie Region Development. Danko said that they were considering an alternative date. "However, then we agreed that the next edition will be held in a year. We have been organising this event since 2000, with the exception of the COVID-19 pandemic," he added. The event offers a rich programme every year, comprised of performances by folklore ensembles, bands, singers and tastings of regional specialties. A holy mass is held as a part of it as well. ko
