Bratislava, April 25 (TASR) - The promotion of Internal Affairs Inspectorate (UIS) head Branislav Zurian to the rank of general is acknowledgement of his professional career and for what he has done, said Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD) on Friday, adding that it was an honour for him to nominate Zurian at a government meeting. According to the minister, Zurian uncompromisingly observed the law and took up a tough stance against crime. "I'm glad to have had the honour of working with him as head of the inspectorate after I took office. Over that year and a half, he has shown that UIS can be run professionally and that the law can be observed," stated Sutaj Estok, claiming that Zurian helped him with his promise that the law would apply to every police officer and that the era of police revenge was over. The UIS chief was pleased with his promotion. "I'm proud of it. I'll wear the general's insignia with pride, and I'll write my rank before my name with pride," he said. The interior minister also responded to the opposition, who have criticised Zurian's promotion. These politicians, he said, are afraid. "I reject statements such as sweeping crimes under the carpet ... UIS is now a component that we can all be proud of, and I think that in any case it is acting lawfully, it is uncovering crimes that took place between 2021-2023," stated Zurian. President Peter Pellegrini promoted Zurian, Prison and Judicial Guard Corps head Lubomir Klistinec and Justice Ministry State Secretary Michal Sedliak to the rank of general at the Presidential Palace on Friday in line with the government's proposal. am/df
