Cadca, April 29 (TASR) - A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the memorial plaque to the victims of WWII in front of the Town Hall building in Cadca (Zilina region) on Tuesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the town's liberation. House Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) was also among those to commemorate the victims of the liberation struggles, accompanied by Cadca mayor Matej Simasek. The two officials also participated in the launch of the project to revitalise the Jewish cemetery in Cadca. The house chair considers it important to recall the horrors of WWII. "We're currently facing the rewriting of history, with historical facts often being distorted within the framework of democracy and freedom of expression. I think that if our children and grandchildren won't know what WWII meant and how many victims it brought, but also who liberated us, then such a tragedy may be repeated in the future," stated Rasi. Rasi views the project to restore the Jewish cemetery in Cadca as a tribute to the Jewish community. "It was one of the most affected during WWII, and only a few hundred survivors remained here from that huge community," said Rasi. At the same time, he praised this kind of use of EU money - for revitalisation of dilapidated cemeteries, bringing greenery, life, but also youth there. The renovation of the Jewish cemetery in Cadca will be financed from the Interreg EU Fund cross-border cooperation programme. Cadca's partners in the project are the village of Vysoka nad Kysucou on the Slovak side and the town of Valasske Mezirici on the Czech side. More than €400,000 have been allocated for the project. ko/mcs
